Jorge has a cleft lip and palate and was nearly left to starve to death by his family. Thanks to a change of heart by his mother, he's starting to get the milk and a surgery that he desperately needs!

God must have big plans for Jorge Morales. He is a tiny survivor.

Jorge is a little boy who is 1 year and 3 months old. He is the youngest of eleven children and has a cleft lip and palate (that means he has a birth defect that left a hole in the roof of his mouth and lip that makes it difficult for him to drink). He was admitted into the ASESLI Milk Program almost a year ago when he was 3 months old, but his mother never returned to receive her baby’s milk. Jorge, then 3 months old, weighed 6 pounds and 4 ounces.

His mother, Lucia, just returned to us in August with Jorge (then 1 year, 2 months) only weighing in at 7 pounds and 3 ounces. That means he had only gained 15 ounces in the entire 11 months prior.

That means he had only gained 15 ounces in the entire 11 months prior.

We were very surprised to see this extremely malnourished baby who was on the verge of death come through our doors. It was a miracle in itself that little Jorge hadn’t already died. We were even more surprised when we looked through the charts and realized that Jorge had already been to ASELSI almost a year ago and had been admitted into the Milk Program where Chrisi serves as a Registered Nurse each Thursday. The ASELSI Milk Program provides formula, milk, vitamins, nutrition drinks and cereals to malnourished babies and children every week until the children reach about 3 years of age.

When we asked Lucia, why she hadn’t returned to receive the milk we had for her, she said that it was because the Mayan witch doctor in the village of Xalbaquic where they live said that she shouldn’t feed little Jorge. So she never came back to get the milk. Because of a witch doctor’s deception, this baby boy was sentenced to die of starvation…but God had other plans.

Many people here have been influenced by the Mayan religion and their belief is often that if someone has a child with a birth defect or a special needs child, that it is because of the sins in their life and so they often see these babies as a curse. Also, Jorge’s father wanted to let him die and they did not want to let their son get surgery to fix his cleft lip and palate — a surgery that ASELSI regularly helps connect families in need with  surgeons who can help.

We are very happy to announce that since Jorge was readmitted into the Milk Program a month ago he has gained almost two pounds and now weighs nine pounds. One of ASELSI’s pastors talked and prayed with the family. Now the mother says that she does want him to get surgery.

Please be praying for Jorge, his family and for God to grant repentance to all the Guatemalans who are being deceived by Satan through the Mayan priests and witch doctors. We know that God has great plans for Jorge’s life and we are excited to be part of it!
