Chicua III is a small community nestled in the hills about 30 minutes outside of Chichicastenago in the western mountains of Guatemala. Recently we got lost trying to use a digital map to find this community so we asked some of the friendly locals. They directed us to leave the paved highway behind as we wound through the forest on a gravel and muddy road that splits cornfields and small groups of houses until we finally arrived at an impressive three story school building where some 160 students gather for their primary education.
We had been invited here to share with the students about the importance of reading and to present the Adventures in Values book that Michael wrote based on Bible stories and principles.
When we arrived, the younger group of students (7-9 yr. olds) were already gathered in a large meeting area and were seated on long strips of cloth with their shoes lying neatly along the edge. After a brief introduction by the director, Prof. Miguel, we began a presentation with an interactive game, action songs, a video and a couple of stories from the Adventure in Values book. Chrisi presented the Gospel and 6-year-old Haim shared why he likes to read.
After we finished about an hour of activities, the students were dismissed and a new group of 10-14 year olds gathered in front of us. Again we shared a game, songs, an encouraging talk, two Bible stories and the Gospel.
Once we finished with the students, we delivered over 160 books to the school directors office to help the teachers develop values that last in their students as well as encourage the students to read.
